Initiated by the artists collective HemCereyan, of which I am a member, in-situ-tute: IMeÇe is a heterotopic speculative school that dynamically weaves the architectural and sociopolitical ecologies of the İMÇ (Istanbul Manufacturers Bazaar, one of the city’s landmarks of modernist and brutalist architecture), through artistic research methodologies. We imagined a network of in-situ educational facilities including a lecture hall, a library, a laboratory and a gymnasium as conceptual and dynamic structures for horizontal and liberating modes of co-creating and communicating knowledge. Throughout the program, a transitional work is carried out between physical and intellectual practices with participants from different fields.

As the speculative library department of the in-situ-tute, that I facilitate,“Re-creative Writing Sessions” are performative gatherings around a séance table where the spirits of deceased thinkers are summoned. Controversial, discredited or overlooked texts—those that no longer align with today’s ethical criteria—are revisited and rewritten. Marginalized or censored writers also find a voice in these trans-temporal sessions, held privately but live-streamed for broader participation. Inspired by the record shops that are full of endangered media (cassette tapes, VHS, DVD, etc.) at İMÇ, these sessions open a portal across diverse realities, geographies, and times—co-authoring evolving ethical standards for future reinterpretation. At the end of the process, they transformed into experimental audiobooks performed by cassette-people.
